Part of a sidewalk collapsed on Westchester Avenue Sunday morning taking with it a man who was standing on it.
The sidewalk collapsed into the basement of a building.
Witnesses say they saw a man standing in front of a barber shop talking on his phone, when he apparently fell through the sidewalk.
Video that was recorded from a woman's cellphone shows firefighters cutting open a basement door to try to get the man out. Witnesses say the man was conscious and standing when firefighters rescued him.
Repair workers have been at site to secure the ground. It is still taped off with caution tape and part of the sidewalk is dangling into the basement.
The owner of the barber shop and the landlord say safety is their top priority. They also say the Department of Buildings were at the scene assessing the damage.
The owner of the barber shop says he will remain closed Sunday.
