A car struck two people in an accident on Remsen Avenue in Canarsie Tuesday evening.
Remnants of two cars that witnesses said were speeding before the accident also littered the scene.
Witnesses told News 12 that the victims were a mother and son who live near the intersection of Remsen and Seaview avenues.
The mother was hospitalized in critical condition, according to authorities, but sources close to the family said they were notified that she'd died from her injuries. The child's condition and the conditions of both drivers were not immediately available.
A woman who identified herself as the victims' mother and grandmother said they were her daughter, Shayna Sinclair, and her 6-year-old grandson, Javon.
Another witness said the two victims were standing at the bus stop when two speeding cars flew up the street. One of them hopped the curb and slammed into the bus stop.
"They both collided and swerved, and they pinned the two people -- the little boy and the mother -- up against the gate," said Michael Thomas.
An MTA bus pulling up to the stop at the time remained at the scene as police investigated.
