An app is helping Long Islanders save cash at the gas pump as prices climb this summer.
The GetUpside app can save drivers up to 25 cents a gallon at about 150 participating gas stations across Long Island.
Each participating station offers a different per-gallon cash-back discount. A driver just needs to pick a station and pump their gas, then snap a picture of their receipt. The credit shows up in the drivers' account the next day, and it can then be cashed out via paper check or PayPal.
Babylon resident Lacey Patnaude, who drives for Lyft and Uber, says she drives all day long and sometimes fills up twice a day. She says she’s been saving about 20 cents per gallon.
"The average person saves $85 to $100 a year, and some of our top users have saved on order of $2,000 to $3,000," says Wayne Lin, of GetUpside.
Participating gas station owners say they're seeing the app catch on.
"We have seen it growing each week, the amount of customers that use the app and come into our station," says BP station owner David Jaffe. "And it's been increasing volume at our gas station, so it's been positive."
The app also works at gas stations in Florida, Maryland and Washington, D.C. The company says it will also be adding a cash-back feature for restaurants and grocery stores.
