Voters come out for federal primary elections

BAY RIDGE -

Congressional candidates squared off in federal primary elections in six districts throughout the city Tuesday.

One of the largest is in the 11th Congressional District, which covers Staten Island and part of southern Brooklyn, including Bay Ridge.

Republican Rep. Dan Donovan, who is being backed by President Donald Trump, is facing a primary challenge from former Rep. Michael Grimm.

Grimm resigned from the same seat in 2014 after pleading guilty to tax fraud. Grimm served seven months in prison for his conviction. He was also caught on video threatening to throw a reporter off a balcony for asking about an investigation into his campaign finances.

Democrats have a six-person primary in the 11th District to choose a candidate for November's general election.

Before heading out to the polls, voters should make sure to bring a photo ID or driver's license.

First time voters can fill out a sample ballot to avoid any confusion and save some time while voting.

Election officials say peak voting times typically take place between 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
