Residents call Schumer in lieu of in-person town hall

PARK SLOPE -

A scheduled town hall meeting with U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer had to be held over the phone after the politician said had trouble getting to Brooklyn.

The meeting was supposed to be held Monday evening at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope. But those planning on showing up were told that it had to be canceled due to problems with Schumer's plane.

Instead, residents were given the chance to call Schumer on the phone and ask their question when it was their turn. Some told News 12 that it does not replace a standard, in-person town hall.

Residents say issues they wanted to bring up included the recent Supreme Court vacancy, separation of families at the U.S.-Mexico border and how Schumer plans to unite the Democratic Party.

A spokesperson for Schumer's office says the senator was upstate when his plane problems arose and that he hosted the telephone town hall from an airport conference room. It lasted more than an hour.

Schumer says he plans to work with the group Indivisible Brooklyn to reschedule to event.
