Fresh Direct is officially open for business in the South Bronx after years of planning, construction and even protests.
The online grocer held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday at its new state-of-the-art headquarters in Port Morris.
Nearly 100 residents and city and business leaders gathered at the distribution center, where packed meals and fresh fruits and vegetables from farms are delivered, sorted, boxed and shipped across the tri-state area, including the entirety of the Bronx.
One of Fresh Direct's initial promises was to hire from the community. To date, about 1,500 employees are Bronx residents.
Since announcing an interest in moving to the South Bronx, Fresh Direct has been met with protests, followed by court battles from opponents fearing truck traffic from the distribution center would choke an already congested area and fill the air with even more exhaust fumes.
Fresh Direct says it’s replaced its fleet of trucks with ones that are environmentally friendly.
