NYPD joins calls for renewal of speed camera program

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Members of the NYPD have joined demonstrators in calling on state legislators to go back in session in Albany to renew New York City's speed camera program.

Officials say speed is a leading factor in crashes that cause injury and death in the city, especially for children and older adults.

The NYPD, citing data, says the program has proven to work and that it would be devastating to get rid of it.

"From 2014 through 2016, locations featuring cameras experienced a 63 percent decline in speeding violations and annual reduction of almost 15 percent in injuries to pedestrians, motorists and cyclists involved in collisions," says Thomas Chan, NYPD chief of transportation.

The speed camera program will expire next Wednesday if it's not renewed.
