Design work is now underway on renovations to the 135-year-old Brooklyn Bridge.
Earlier this month, the city Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a plan to refurbish the bridge's pointed arches on the Brooklyn and Manhattan approaches.
Most of the work will be structural, according to the city Department of Transportation, ensuring strong foundations for decades to come. But the plan also includes cleaning, repointing and repairing cracks in the walls, or replacing walls altogether.
A DOT spokesperson says work is scheduled to begin next March, with the goal to have it completed by June 2022.
