#N12BK: Bill would reduce NYC ride-shares

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

The New York City Council is considering a bill that would reduce the amount of ride-sharing cars allowed in the city at a given time.

The proposed legislation is an effort to cut down on traffic congestion from Uber and Lyft vehicles in the city, according to council members.

However, council members say wheelchair-accessible vehicles would be exempt from the bill.

A new study found that 60 percent of people in large cities who use ride-sharing services would take public transportation, a bicycle or simply walk to their destination as an alternative.

Lyft released a statement saying in part, "This would take New York back to an era of standing on the corner and hoping to get a ride. Wait times would increase significantly and driver earnings and job opportunities would shrink. Worst of all, the proposals prioritize corporate medallion owners above the overwhelming majority of New Yorkers."

If passed, the bill would be the first in a major city to put restrictions on Uber and Lyft services.
