Councilmember announces ‘Junior’ street co-naming
City Councilman Ritchie Torres is pushing for a Belmont street to be co-named in honor of Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz, the 15-year-old who a gang of men brutally stabbed to death in the neighborhood.
Junior's relatives joined Torres for the announcement Monday at the intersection of East 183rd Street and Bathgate Avenue, which could get a sign reading "Lesandro 'Junior' Way" as early as next January.
According to investigators, a group of men in the Trinitarios gang attacked Junior in front of a bodega there, hacking, slashing and stabbing him multiple times. Surveillance cameras recorded the violence, and the video garnered many views online and prompted widespread condemnation.
Junior fled toward St. Barnabas Hospital with critical injuries and died outside.
City Council has to approve the sign, but Torres says he expects it to do so this year.
