The first-ever Spanish-speaking specialized high school resource fair was held at the Bronx High School of Science Thursday.
The fair is part of an extension of the Discovery Program, a New York City initiative that seeks to promote diversity at specialized schools by offering admission to students from low-income families who score just below the entrance exam cutoff.
Thursday’s fair enabled non-English speakers to obtain information in their native language to learn about their children can be admitted into specialized schools.
“So what we want do is be able to bring this information to communities in their language about what it takes, what the process is, how they can prepare for the admissions process…” says NYC Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza. “And we plan to do this in many more school communities in their language.”
News 12 is told that 20 percent of the ninth-grade seats in every specialized high school are expected to be set aside for the Discovery Program’s students by 2020.
