A local campaign is encouraging young Bronx students to avoid drinking juice and soda at school this year and instead only drink water.
Montefiore Health System's Office of Community & Population Health's "Rethink Your Drink" campaign educates young students about the contents of their drinks.
Making healthy drink choices isn't easy. According to the New York City Department of Health, one in five kindergartners in the city is obese.
Dr. Delaney Gracy, of Montefiore, says most sodas have nearly 12 teaspoons of sugar, which is the entire daily recommended amount.
She says educating kids about eating and drinking healthy is key to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Gracy says water is the healthiest option, and the best way to make sure kids avoid sugary drinks.
She says families should set examples for their children by not keeping soda in the house or drinking it in front of them.
Dr. Gracy says all dietary choices should be made together as a family to help encourage everyone to maintain better health.
