A men's homeless shelter being built on a residential street in East Flatbush across from a school was the focus of a meeting Friday night.
Residents are concerned about having a shelter on East 93rd Street. On July 24, a pre-application was filed to turn a four-family dwelling into an adult emergency shelter, but it hasn't been formally approved by the Department of Buildings. It's located across from P.S. 219 Kennedy-King School.
A stop-work order was issued, but apparently construction never stopped. The DOB has received 16, 311 complaints since August 9 when the stop-work order was put in place. The order was for not having proper permits to install a bathroom and a fire escape.
Residents fear there will be criminals and drug users drawn to the shelter.
A Department of Social Services spokesperson says the NYC Department of Social Services, which includes the Department of Homeless Services and the Human Resources Administration is not utilizing the location.
That has some people wondering what is really going into the building.
Assemblyman Nick Perry is now trying to find out if a private entity can run a homeless shelter.
