Relatives say West Nile virus has claimed the life of a longtime Little League coach in Bergen County, but authorities are working to confirm the official circumstances of the man’s death.

Fred Maikisch was diagnosed with the mosquito-borne virus earlier this month.

Maikisch’s sister posted on Facebook that the virus caused severe damage to his organs. He was removed from a respirator and died Saturday.

According to his obituary, Maikisch was the Lodi Little League coach for more than 20 years.

The state Department of Health confirmed two cases of West Nile in Bergen County last week, but didn’t specifically identify where the patients were from.

The Borough of Lodi said in a statement, "We have been in touch with the Bergen County Department of Health, as well as the Bergen County Mosquito Control Commission since the story appeared on social media and are awaiting the facts for verification concerning this very unfortunate incident."
