A Newark man says it was a life-changing experience when he went to North Carolina to volunteer for Hurricane Florence relief.
Christian Reid and a friend volunteered to head south after the storm to help out. They took at boat with them, in order to rescue people and animals.
Once there, Reid and his friend helped to rescue some goat.
“This lady came up to us and said, I’ve got a bunch of goats that are going to drown because the river was rising still,” Reid says.
The former lifeguard says he was able to pull 15 goats to safety when an animal rescue facility flooded. He also rescued some dogs left stranded on rooftops after being left behind by their owners.
“We had to literally catch every single one of them, because they did not want to go,” Reid says.
They also brought some large bags of dog food with them, which turned out to be much needed.
Reid says that he is planning on becoming a firefighter and says that the experience changed him.
“It was unbelievable. We met so many cool people and it was just the experience of a lifetime,” he says.
He says that if another hurricane hits, he would like to be a part of the rescue effort again.
