A group of Bushwick students unveiled a new outdoor art gallery Friday aimed at improving their neighborhood.
The after-school project called "Brighten Broadway" can be seen along Broadway between Madison Street and Myrtle Avenue under the train tracks.
The stretch of street has recently been known as the epicenter of the K2 drug epidemic.
The art signs were created by 15 EBC High School for Public Service students and are designed to depict historical figures.
"We made portraits and murals and posted them all over to make it more vibrant and more safe for people," says participant Sergio Suarez.
The gallery comes after a partnership with the city’s Department of Transportation's art program and Councilman Antonio Reynoso, who says he helped the students secure funding for the project.
"They advocated and lobbied and eventually got what they wanted and I’m very proud of that," Reynoso says.
The project took approximately four years to complete and was inspired by historical monuments around the city with the help of local artist Thomas Gleisner.
