Police have identified the woman who died after she was shot while walking down a street in East New York.
Authorities say 21-year-old Sabrina Moreno, of Sunset Park, was walking down Van Siclen Avenue with her boyfriend around 7 p.m. Friday when another man approached them, pulled out a gun and opened fire.
Police say the woman shot once in the neck. She was rushed to Brookdale Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Moreno had been staying at the Third Avenue women’s shelter and her friends say they don’t know why she was so far from the shelter after dark.
Investigators say they believe her attacker may have been an ex-boyfriend and that the two had some kind of dispute.
Moreno is known to authorities after surveillance video appeared to show her allegedly stealing an elderly woman's purse in April.
The suspect is described as a man in his 20s who was wearing an orange hoodie. Police say he took off in a white car down Pitkin Avenue.
Investigators say the woman may have known her attacker.
