Police: Woman robbed inside elevator of her apartment building

Residents in Hoboken are on alert after a city resident was robbed inside the elevator of her own apartment building.
Hoboken police say that the robbery happened around 11 p.m. Monday inside an apartment building located on Fifth Street between Jefferson and Adams streets.
The victim had walked into the lobby and saw a man opening packages that were meant for tenants. Police say that she stepped into the elevator and that the man followed her inside, and then took her phone and purse.
Police located the suspect, identified as Andrew Wheeler, several blocks away on Third Street and Jackson Street. Police say that Wheeler was in possession of the woman’s belongings.
Wheeler was charged with robbery and false imprisonment.
Hoboken City Councilwoman Vanessa Falco says that the incident is disturbing and is reminding Hoboken residents to be aware of their safety.
“Nowadays we just can’t take it for granted. We’ve seen an increase in a homeless population,” she says. “You need to protect yourself, hide your cellphone or have it readily available. Have your keys available.”
Hoboken police also warn residents to never confront a stranger and keep their belongings secured. They are also warned to make as few stops as possible when heading home if it is very late.
