The current occupants of the 18th century DeMott home in Rockville Centre are working to get the house designated as a historic landmark.
Steven and Gloria Bryan, who have lived in the home since the 1970s, say they are working with the town of Hempstead on the designation. The Village of Rockville Centre says it does not have a process to designate sites for historic preservation, but that it has formed a committee to look into it.
The Bryans say they want to make sure the house is protected from being taken down in the future.
This house was built by Anthony DeMott back in 1747. He was one of the first settlers of the Rockville Centre area. DeMott owned hundreds of acres of land and a mill located at what is now Hempstead Lake State Park.
The Bryans say they feel blessed to be part of the home's rich history and hope future generations of Rockville Centre families will also enjoy it.
“Sometimes at night when I go outside…I think I just can't believe I’m living here,” says Gloria.
The couple plans to celebrate Thanksgiving at the home with their children and grandchildren.
