Mayor faces heat after event to honor victims of 2017 Halloween attackPosted: Updated:
Mayor Bill de Blasio is facing some criticism after botching a ceremony meant to honor eight people who were killed during last year's West Side Highway truck attack.
News 12 is told one of the victim's mothers was invited at the last minute and therefore was unable to attend the event.
Mayor de Blasio also failed to read off the names of the victims and rushed back to the podium as crowds were already dispersing.
"I want to apologize that this should have been part of the gathering to read the names of the eight that we lost," de Blasio said. "So I want to right that wrong with apologies and do that now and ask everyone to just bow your heads as we remember each of them."
Two Americans, a Belgian and five Argentine tourists were killed when a man drove a rented pick-up truck down the highway's bike path.
A wreath of white roses was placed at the site of the attack.
