FDNY: Extension cord causes Allerton apartment building blaze
An extension cord is to blame for a fire in Allerton that left two people injured, according to the FDNY.
It happened Tuesday afternoon at an apartment building on Barnes Avenue.
More than 100 first responders worked to put the flames out as the fire tore through the second floor.
Officials say it took only six minutes for the fire to engulf the surrounding floors.
As the flames continued to spread, residents made their way out of the building.
"A lady was going through the hall banging ‘fire, fire, fire,’ she absolutely saved our lives I didn't even smell it or hear the alarm or anything it was within minutes and it just engulfed,” saysresident Dustin Darst. “It's absolutely devastating. I cried for at least an hour; it's awful, like I said I moved here from Oklahoma to live in the Bronx and for me to almost lose my home is absolutely devastating."
Officials say two people were hurt, one with serious injuries.
