A much-used laundromat in Crown Heights has been shuttered because of a financial dispute between the business owner and his landlord.
Bruce Edwards has owned Island Bubbles on Rogers Avenue for 13 years. He says he arrived to his business last month to find the locks had been changed.
Since then, he hasn't been able to go inside, even to get his employees' personal items, his machines or his customers' clothing.
Edwards told News 12 he missed the deadline to renew his lease, but has since obtained legal counsel -- hoping he can still stay.
News 12 spoke with Level One Holdings, who says Edwards hasn't been paying his rent or his water bill for two years.
In response, Edwards sent News 12 copies of cashier’s checks written out to the management company from this past year. He says he hasn’t missed a payment.
Edwards says his landlord has been charging him the water bill for the entire building, not just for his business. He says it's that entire bill he hasn't always agreed to pay.
"This is financial bullying," Edwards says. “I need to get my workers back working. This is not about me. I have people who work for me who have families."
