EAST NEW YORK -

Police say a 52-year-old woman stole a car with a 2-year-old child in the backseat while a mother was getting gas on Euclid and Sutter avenues Sunday.

Officials say the incident happened at around 1:30 p.m. They say the suspect drove the stolen Honda Accord and struck a 36-year-old man walking down Sutter Avenue. They say she then lost control and crashed into parked cars on Sutter and Belmont avenues.

Police say the suspect then tried to escape but a good Samaritan held her down.

The 52-year-old woman was taken into custody.

Police say the child was unharmed.
