Borough President Eric Adams announced an increase in safety measures Monday after several shootings in populated shopping areas.
The NYPD says that four people were involved in shootings in Downtown Brooklyn over the past five months. All of the incidents took place in heavily trafficked shopping areas.
In July, three people were shot at Fulton Mall. All victims survived that shooting. In November, a 25-year-old man was shot and killed in a Target at City Point.
Adams says the number of courts, schools and shopping areas in Downtown Brooklyn makes safety in the area even more of a priority.
The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership says security cameras have been replaced. The NYPD says it has increased patrol officers in public spaces.
Local officials say that as people finish up their holiday shopping, there should be no concern of violence.
These changes come after a series of discussions with all agencies involved.
The agencies say they will continue to monitor any progress on the ground and adapt if necessary.
