City Council unanimously passes school bus reform

City Council has passed long-awaited school bus reform via a unanimous vote Wednesday morning.

A 17-0 vote pushed forward reform that would require all buses have a GPS tracking system and a two-way radio. It will also add more reporting requirements for bus drivers. All that is left is for Mayor Bill de Blasio to sign on the bill.
Councilman Ritchie Torres says the reform is a long time coming.
"We've seen bus contractors who have a track record of serious delays and no-shows," says Torres. "The DOE received over 130,000 complaints."
The Department of Education welcomes the reforms, saying in part, "Families deserve safe and reliable transportation, which is why we're placing GPS on all buses by the 2019-20 school year and making several improvements to school bus service."
