Some Brooklyn residents are calling on the city to landmark a 121-year-old church to protect it from being demolished.

Respect Brooklyn is a coalition of concerned residents who are advocating for sensible development and historic preservation.

Advocates from the group tell News 12 Brooklyn that they filed an emergency request to landmark the Flatbush Church of the Redeemer.

They say a real estate company is marketing the century-old church, which means a developer could tear it down.

Respect Brooklyn says that a church congregation has not worshiped there since last year, but since the outside of the church is in perfect condition they would like to see the city landmark the church.

Those who would like to support the landmarking of the church can send an email through the Respect Brooklyn website.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has since released a statement that reads, “The Landmarks Preservation Commission received a request to evaluate the Flatbush Presbyterian Church as a potential landmark from the group Respect Brooklyn and it is currently under review.”
