Fire & Ice! Firefighters work to put out Bed-Stuy blaze

First responders battled challenging conditions at the scene of a five-alarm blaze in Bed-Stuy.

Crews first responded to the blaze on Vernon Avenue Thursday morning.

The 911 calls come in around 3:40 a.m., and almost immediately firefighters had to be pulled out of the building for safety reasons.

Flames were shooting through the roof of the building.

It took nearly seven hours to put the flames out.

All the water they had to use flooded the area, shutting Broadway down for quite some time.

The acting chief of the department told News 12 these types of conditions are some of the most difficult they encounter.
