Really good neighbor: Woman donates kidney to save man's life
A good neighbor may pick up your mail or even let you have a cup of sugar, but a Morris County woman went one step further - she gave up a kidney to save a man's life.
Donor Kim Roumes says she saw a Facebook post that Bob Williams' wife had written, saying he needed a kidney because he was close to being put on dialysis.
Despite her family's concerns and not seeing her neighbor in years, the fearless mother says she answered the call of duty without hesitation or regret.
"I just said 'Bob is such a wonderful, nice person, I think I can do this,'" she said.
Williams was not aware, but Roumes filled out an application at the hospital and took numerous tests last November.
When she finally told Williams about her plans, things got emotional.
"He hugged me - I think 13, 14, 15 times, and he thanked me and I said, 'Wait, we don't know yet for sure if I am a perfect match.' But I said this was a sign... this was meant to be," she said.
The surgery took place last week Tuesday. Williams' wait time for a kidney would have been between three and five years.
Williams and Roumes, are dealing with some aches and pains, but overall, the surgery was a success.
WIlliams told News 12 that he is feeling better each and every day, thanks to his neighbor/angel.
He took to Twitter to thanks her, saying in part,"...There are no words that can properly describe the love I have for this selfless and caring human being. We now share a lifelong bond. My gratefulness is eternal."
Williams is a traffic reporter, and says he plans to resume working in a couple of weeks.
Once their wounds fully heal, they will be teaming up to tell their story and spread awareness of the importance of organ donations.
