Bronx Borough President Diaz Jr. gives 2019 State of the Borough address
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. held his 10th State of the Borough address in the Bronx Thursday.
One of the key issues Diaz Jr. discussed was safety for young people in the borough. He said, "The future of our young people... it's not just in the classroom or at an internship. We need to work to protect our children from the dangers of the streets."
Diaz Jr. announced the founding of Camp Junior in honor of 15-year-old Lesandro Guzman-Feliz, who was killed by Trinitarios gang members. Camp Junior will offer free recreational and educational programs outside of the city, including an anti-violence program.
Leandra Feliz, Lesandro's mother, says she feels comforted that her son's memory will help other children in the borough.
Diaz Jr. also discussed a proposal to build a new jail site in Mott Haven, which he says would be better located elsewhere.
He also says the number of homicides are down in the Bronx, with less than 100 homicides in 2018 and that unemployment is down by more than half.
