Nassau will invest $5.4M toward affordable housing, ends 14-year battle

After a nearly 15-year battle, Nassau has reached a settlement with the groups New York Communities for Change and Mutual Housing Association of New York to build affordable housing in the county.
At the heart of the 2005 lawsuit was a property on the corner of 11th Street and Washington Avenue in Garden City. At that point, the county was going to sell the property, but the village rezoned it – blocking an affordable housing unit from being built there.
Housing advocates claimed the move was made to prevent minorities from moving into Garden City.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says under this settlement they will develop all kinds of housing for all residents. She says $5.4 million will be going toward “affordable housing development.”
A location for the affordable housing units has not been announced yet.
