Sen. Gaughran on LIPA tax battle: 'It’s going to impact school districts, property taxes'
More than 100 residents from the Town of Huntington attended a town hall meeting Saturday to review the ongoing legal battle regarding LIPA’s pursuit of large, immediate tax cuts.
LIPA has argued that the town grossly over-assessed its power plant in Northport and that it's overpaid millions of dollars in taxes over the years as a result. The agency says it paid more than $82 million in taxes last year for the Northport Power Plant, but should have paid a fraction of that.
Residents, however, say they are concerned about the financial consequences of LIPA’s suit.
If LIPA wins the case, which has now made it to the Supreme Court, residents and businesses in the Town of Huntington could see major tax hikes.
“It’s going to impact school districts and property taxes big time,” says Sen. Jim Gaughran.
The next meeting on the issue will take place Wednesday, March 20 at 7 p.m.
News 12 reached out to LIPA for a comment, but did not hear back.
