The East Flatbush community came together in mourning and prayer after a 21-year-old man was fatally shot across the street from his apartment last week.

Clevens Valcin's mother was distraught during the vigil for her son and needed to be escorted home by Valcin's father and stepfather.

His Creole-speaking father clutched photos of his Haitian-born son, who was brought to Brooklyn at 3 years old.

Christopher Petit says he is devastated by the loss of his cousin and roommate, saying they were more like brothers.

"It was heartbreaking, it seems unreal in a way," Petit says. "I just tell myself he went on vacation and he's going to come back."

Police say Valcin was shot in the head across the street from his apartment last Wednesday.

The family tells News 12 they're trying to raise money for Valcin's funeral and also start a scholarship in his name.
