Wake services held for Bronx firefighter who died in Afghanistan
Wake services were held Thursday for a Bronx firefighter who was killed in the line of duty earlier this month in Afghanistan.
Christopher Slutman, 43, spent 15 years in the FDNY, four of them at Ladder 27 in Claremont. Officials say Slutman was the fourth FDNY member to die while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan since 2003.
Slutman's mother and father were both firefighters, and he has two brothers in the Army and Marines. He has another brother working in Washington, D.C. as a firefighter, and has his sister's husband in the U.S. Air Force.
His colleagues in the Bronx says there's no one like Slutman, and that he was humble and knowledgeable.
Slutman's mother was seen carrying a folded American flag after leaving the service. His wife, Shannon, was at the wake.
Slutman's three daughters were not at the wake, but will be at the funeral Friday in Manhattan.
