The funeral for FDNY hero and Marine Christopher Slutman, who was killed earlier this month in Afghanistan, was held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on 53rd Street in Manhattan Friday.
The 15-year veteran of the FDNY was one of three Americans killed when their convoy hit a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
During the service, New York City Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said Slutman was "a brave member who not only protected our great city but also served this country."
He was awarded a medal in 2014 for rescuing an unconscious woman from a burning building in the South Bronx. Those who knew him said it was just one of many examples of his exceptional character.
Slutman leaves behind his wife Shannon and his three daughters.
He will be buried on Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery.
