Plan to bring state-of-the-art ice rink to Coney Island may be on thin ice

CONEY ISLAND -

There's a redevelopment plan in the works in Coney Island, but some in the area aren't too happy about it.

The Economic Development Corporation released a request for proposals, looking for developers to demolish the Abe Stark Sports Center and build a new, state-of-the-art ice skating rink.

The plan is a part of a 2009 rezoning agreement to expand Coney Island's amusement district.

Councilman Mark Treyger says he wants the city to consider the community when making decisions about the center's future.

"We need a center that they can access on a daily basis, they can afford on a monthly basis,” says Councilman Treyger. “Recreational programs, educational programs, not just the hockey rink but free, affordable community space for the residents that call Coney Island home."

A spokesperson for the Economic Development Corporation released a statement saying in part, "We're excited to source proposals for the development of a new, state-of-the-art ice rink and multi-use facility in Coney Island. The publicly available space seeks to bring amenities such as community space and programming, entertainment and new dining options to America’s playground. We look forward to working with local stakeholders, elected officials and potential development partners to bring this project to fruition."

The request for proposals deadline is June 7.

Councilman Treyger says once the proposals are collected the community will have a chance to weigh in at community board meetings.
