Police: 3-year-old fatally struck by van, driver in custody

A 3-year-old boy was struck by a van on Bay 25th Street in a marked crosswalk Thursday, and later died from his injuries, police say.

A 3-year-old boy was struck by a van on Bay 25th Street in a marked crosswalk Thursday and later died from his injuries, police say.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Bay 25th Street and Benson Avenue around 12:45 p.m.
The child had been riding a scooter and went into the street prior to being struck. He was with his mother at the time.
Officers discovered the boy, identified as Emur Shavkator, with trauma to his head and torso. He was transported to Coney Island Hospital, where he later died.
Video shows the young boy's mother trailing just steps behind with her other, infant child.
The driver of the van, identified as Johnny Gonzalez, 61, stayed on the scene and was taken into custody. He is facing charges that include failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.
The incident has caught the attention of some elected officials, who are calling for safety changes at the intersection.
