The Kalief Browder Foundation hosted a block party Saturday to bring attention to alternatives to incarceration.

The celebration was held on what would have been Browder’s 26th birthday. His brother Akeem says he's working with the foundation to keep his legacy alive.

Browder was 16 years old when he was sent to Riker's Island for allegedly stealing a book bag. He served three years until the charges were dropped.

After being released from jail, Browder took his own life.

Music, food and educational resources were available to attendees. The block that Browder grew up on and is now named after him was closed off for the gathering.
