CONEY ISLAND -

Beach season has begun, but some beachgoers say they noticed that there aren't as many lifeguards out.

Officials say there is no reason to panic, it's typical protocol.

The Parks Department told News 12 there is no shortage of lifeguards. Peak staffing does not begin until around July 4.

Some beachgoers say as long as there are lifeguards nearby, they feel safe.

The Parks Department says some empty lifeguard stations are typical this time of year.
