A summer program aimed to empower young girls is coming to the Bronx for its first New York attendance.

Grab the Torch is an eight-day program that focuses on teaching teenage girls to find oneself and what it is like to be a public servant. The students will get the opportunity to hear from philanthropists, business leaders and education leaders. They will also get to chat with Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.

The program has been in other states in its 11-year history, including Connecticut, Colorado, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine. Bronx girls have been a part of the program since 2009.

Those selected for the program will stay at Manhattan College and take courses at Horace Mann Campus in Fieldston. The curriculum focuses on leadership, ethics, purpose and philanthropy.

The program is open to high school girls from independent, charter and public schools. There are five scholarships available and applicants will have to write an essay about how they think the program will enrich their lives. The program kicks off on July 28.
