Friends, cyclists remember woman who died in NYC's 18th cycling fatality
The Sunset Park community came together Tuesday night to mourn a woman killed while riding her bicycle Monday.
Activists say Em Samolewicz, 30, is the 18th cyclist killed this year in New York City. Those who knew her say the city is not safe for bike riders.
Police say Samolewicz was traveling northbound on 3rd Avenue Monday when the incident occurred. They say when she tried to maneuver around the open door of a parked car, she was struck by a tractor-trailer. When emergency responders got there, they found her with severe trauma to her body.
Police sources say the driver initially drove off, unaware of what happened, but returned after someone flagged him down.
Many who knew Samolewicz say she loved yoga, was an artist and was known in her community for standing up for justice.
