Wrong-way driver sentenced in fatal DWI collision on Belt Parkway

Posted: Updated:

The man responsible for a wrong-way collision that killed a man on the Belt Parkway will serve seven to 21 years in prison.

Aleh Sheipak, 51, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated driving while intoxicated in June.

The district attorney's office says Sheipak was seen driving his Volkswagen eastbound on the westbound lanes of the Belt Parkway. Investigators say he drove more than 2 miles in the wrong direction before colliding head-on with a Honda Accord Lyft.

Gerald Obah, a passenger, was killed. A 29-year-old female passenger was treated for multiple fractures and the 20-year-old Lyft driver was also injured.

Obah’s brother Eugene read an impact statement before sentencing, saying that Gerald was “full of life.”

“He was a great guy,” Eugene told News 12. “He was somebody who marched to the beat of his own drum…it's just unfortunate what has happened.”

Investigators say Sheipak showed signs of intoxication at the scene and failed a sobriety test given by officers. He pleaded guilty in June and apologized in court Wednesday.
