Police: Man facing hate crime charges for Crown Heights attack

Posted: Updated:

A man is accused of attacking two people in Crown Heights and is now facing hate crime charges.

Police say 39-year-old Kenya Dean yelled anti-Semitic comments during the attack Friday night. It happened along Carroll Street around 7 p.m.

One of the victims, a 27-year-old Jewish man, says Dean started an argument with him before breaking a glass bottle and rushing at him. Dean is also accused of spraying the victim in the face with an unknown substance.

A 62-year-old neighbor walked over to see what was going on. That's when Dean allegedly attacked him, hitting him in the head with a stick.

News 12 spoke with Rabbi Israel Shemtov, who lives in the area. He founded a neighborhood patrol and says there is no room for hateful people in the community.

"No one in the United States of America should not be able to walk without being attacked, harassed in any way or manor. If they do, they don't belong here," Shemtov said.

Dean is facing charges of harassment as a hate crime, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
