Council members from across the city are fighting to keep the Gifted and Talented program going after an advisory group recommended ending and replacing it.
A group of council members took over the steps of City Hall on Wednesday to come down against the recommendation made by the School Diversity Advisory Group.
The group suggested to move away from "unjust" Gifted and Talented programs in city schools and develop new research-based programs that would "serve all children."
Elected officials say the system needs to change, but with expansions so the programs would be in every school in the city. District 7 in the South Bronx doesn't have any of the programs.
Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Eric Adams held town halls on the same topic back in 2017 in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the August recommendations made by the School Diversity Advisory Group are just the start.
