Chef's Quick Tips: Gory severed hand punch

This week,  Rachel Lampen and Kristen Mitrakis, owners of Rock Paper Scissors Custom Events, show Tina Redwine how to whip up some scary good Halloween party ideas.

Gory Severed Hand Punch
Ingredients:
  • 1 liter soda (we used ginger ale)
  • small bottle cranberry juice (optional)
  • 1 Latex powder-free glove (medium)
  • blue or black food coloring gel
  • toy floating eyeballs or lychees filled with a blueberry
  • pack of glow sticks
  • ¼ cup vinegar (mixed with red dye)
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of baking soda
Preparation:
  1. Pour the soda and cranberry juice (if using) into a clear punch bowl decorated with battery powered Halloween lights.
  2. For the gory hand, fill a food safe glove 3/4 full with water or juice. If the inside of the glove is flocked, turn glove inside-out before filling.
  3. Add a dark food dye gel to give the appearance of veins.
  4. Tie glove like a balloon, or twist the end and use an elastic band and lay as flat as possible in the freezer. Leave for a few hours or overnight.
  5. When frozen solid, remove from freezer and very gently cut the gloves off using small scissors or knife. Be careful not to break the fingers off, although a floating digit or two adds to the HORROR. Place hand in the punch bowl to float in the soda.
  6. Add different color glow sticks and eyeballs (or lychees), but take care not to scoop these out when serving.
  7. Place a gory goblet by the punch bowl with a bowl underneath it. Fill it with vinegar and when the party guests have arrived, add baking powder to create an overflowing, bubbling concoction. This is for visuals only - make sure no one drinks it!
