This month marks five years since NYPD detectives Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were shot and killed while sitting in their patrol car in Bed-Stuy.
Since their deaths, both of their families have organized foundations in their honor.
For Maritza Ramos, this time of year is especially hard. On Dec. 20, 2014, her husband was killed.
"I miss him immensely. My kids miss him, and it's just really hard," said Maritza Ramos.
Maritza Ramos says she works hard to ensure that her husband's memory is never forgotten. The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation was created in his honor.
Over the years, the foundation has held backpack giveaways and toy giveaways at schools across the city.
"I feel like this is what helps me get up each morning, knowing that if I can make a difference in the community then I need to do that," said Maritza Ramos.
She says she knows this is how her husband would have wanted to be honored.
"I know he wouldn't want me to give up," said Maritza Ramos.
The foundation is holding its annual toy drive next Friday with several celebrities attending, including Joseph Sikora from the TV series "Power."
The toys collected will be given out to kids at a local school on the week of the anniversary of the detectives' deaths.
