Nuyorican poet, playwright, actress and activist Caridad de la Luz, a.k.a. La Bruja, recently received the Jerome Hill Fellowship Grant to repair El Garaje, a 1920s trucking garage that will celebrate its centennial in 2020.
El Garaje is a restored 1920s trucking garage in Soundview that has been transformed into a creative arts space.
It has already hosted big band rehearsals, parties and smaller events, but the poet has plans to turn it into a haven for the Bronx where people from all over the world can come and spend time.
The grant will give her $40,000 in two years to repair the roof of the venue, build a bathroom and install heat and air conditioning.
It is also being used to further her knowledge and understanding of Native American tradition and healing as it pertains to her personal belief that El Garaje is on sacred land.
