Students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel school were sent home with a warning for their families Friday after a suspicious white van was spotted in the Belmont neighborhood.
A letter was sent home and the school expressed that it is now on high alert.
In the letter, sent to News 12 by a concerned parent, the principal writes that a white van was spotted circling the pre-K through eighth grade Catholic school on Bathgate Avenue — and approaching children.
It did not elaborate on the type of vehicle or the driver or when specifically it was seen.
According to the letter, students in the upper grades were warned by staff Friday about the dangers of approaching strangers and encouraged all families to continue that conversation at home.
Parents tell News 12 that other advice discussed with students was to not be distracted by their cellphones when walking by themselves.
The Archdiocese of New York tells News 12 that it provided all the information it has about the suspicious van to NYPD and that it is now a police matter.
