Some Connecticut students got the day off Wednesday. But with the snow falling early in the morning, parents were left wondering if a snow day was really necessary.
Students in Monroe, Shelton, Trumbull and Bridgeport, among others, were closed Wednesday, while most others opened with a delay. Since the state requires school to be in session for 180 days before the end of the school year, cancellations can eat into summer vacation or spring break.
Students were in agreement that they were happy to have the day off.
"I don't know ... you don't want to not cancel school and then someone gets hurt, so I think they're just looking out for our safety at the end of the day," said one Shelton student.
But some parents said it seemed like overkill.
"Shelton seems to be overly cautious with canceling school," said one parent. "So this is our third snow day in the last six days of school."
Representatives for Monroe Public Schools said the superintendent talks to the Department of Public Works and other town officials and then makes the decision they feel is safest for students and faculty.
