The Brookfield Police Department delivered 2,000 toys to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital Monday to bring some cheer to kids who have to spend the holidays in a hospital bed.
The Brookfield community came together to accrue such a large donation. This year, the police department had to use their cruisers and even rent a UPS truck to deliver the gifts.
Officer Mitch Heller and two of his colleagues came up with the idea five years ago, and each year it gets bigger. Over the last two years, they've donated the toys at Yale New Haven.
Now, all that's left is for Santa and staff to pass out the toys on Christmas.
"It's a blessing to us, like it makes us feel great, but it's not about us, it's about the kids, we know they need it, and that's why they do it," says Heller.
And it's the gift that keeps on giving -- the hospital is going to be able to give out the toys throughout the year, not just on Christmas.
