Police say they are still investigating the cause of a fire in a Nutley home that killed a mother and her 7-year-old child Saturday.
They say the second floor was destroyed and the first floor has been boarded up.
Neighbor Joe Caprio was driving by the house during the fire and stopped to help. He entered the home to rescue a man inside.
Caprio says the man looked like had several burns and was in shock when he saved him.
“All of a sudden I saw hand a hand come out of like the darkness and it was chard and burnt and he just came and he was trying to unlock the door, and I was saying sir, you have to unlock the door you have to get me in here we have to get you out,” says Caprio. “Finally, he got it open and when he opened the door…I saw that he was completely covered in black soot and burned and completely disoriented and in shock, and I grabbed him and said you have to get out.”
Caprio also says the man told him that this daughter and grandson were upstairs, but the second floor was already entirely engulfed in flames.
The man that Caprio saved is still in the hospital but his condition is unknown.
